Our School Allotment (Ofsted)

The school allotment forms an integral part of our curriculum and wider personal development offer, providing meaningful opportunities for pupils to apply learning beyond the classroom. It is carefully designed to reflect our core values of Respect, Excellence and Friendship, while supporting our commitment to the Healthy Schools framework.

Intent

The allotment is intended to support pupils’ personal development, wellbeing and employability by offering purposeful, practical learning opportunities. It enables pupils to develop resilience, teamwork and independence, while gaining an understanding of healthy lifestyles, sustainability and where food comes from. The project supports those pupils who benefit from experiential learning and complements our alternative provision pathways.

Implementation

Pupils are actively involved in all aspects of the allotment, including preparing the land, planting, maintaining crops and harvesting produce. Learning is structured and linked to curriculum areas such as food technology, PSHE and physical wellbeing. Inclusive design features, including raised beds and a polytunnel, ensure that all pupils, including those with mobility needs, can participate fully.

Staff model high expectations and positive working relationships, reinforcing our values by encouraging mutual respect, cooperation and pride in achievement. Produce grown on the allotment is used within school, providing real-life outcomes that motivate pupils and give learning clear purpose.

Impact

The allotment has a positive impact on pupils’ engagement, behaviour and confidence. Pupils demonstrate increased motivation, improved teamwork and a stronger understanding of healthy eating and physical wellbeing, supporting our Healthy Schools priorities. Many pupils who find classroom‑based learning challenging are able to succeed and excel in this environment, transferring these skills back into other areas of school life. Students who access the allotment are usually on Pathway 4 provision, with the allotment forming part of our Alternative Provision offer, complementing Pathway 2 or Pathway 3.

The allotment plays a significant role in preparing pupils for adulthood by developing transferable skills, promoting positive attitudes to work and supporting overall wellbeing.
