Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural Development, incorporating Fundamental British Values Policy Statement

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development (SMSC)

SMSC development is integral to our curriculum across all pathways.

  • Spiritual – pupils are supported to explore feelings, preferences and interests, developing awareness of themselves and others.
  • Moral – pupils learn about right and wrong through clear expectations, consistent responses and reflective approaches.
  • Social – pupils develop communication, cooperation and relationship skills through structured and supported interactions.
  • Cultural – pupils are introduced to a range of experiences, traditions and perspectives, promoting curiosity and respect.

Market Field: Values, Personal Development and British Values in Practice

At Market Field School, our “inclusion and diversity focus of the week” forms a central part of pupils’ personal development and underpins daily life across the school. Each focus is explored through a carefully chosen range of stimuli and experiences that are appropriate to pupils’ individual needs and stages of development.

This approach reflects and celebrates our spiritual and cultural diversity, while encouraging curiosity, reflection, understanding and respect. The value is reinforced consistently through:

  • assemblies
  • classroom discussions
  • visual displays and artwork
  • structured reflection opportunities
  • enrichment activities that support pupils to explore values in meaningful, accessible ways

Assemblies, Enrichment and Community Links

Assemblies are adapted to ensure all pupils can engage and are used to reinforce shared values, respect for others and a sense of belonging. Where appropriate, pupils are supported to take part in:

  • themed assemblies and celebrations
  • opportunities for reflection and quiet time
  • structured discussion or response activities linked to current issues or shared experiences
  • participation in carefully selected activities, events and visits within the local community such as to care homes or to participate in Remembrance Events.

These experiences help pupils develop an understanding of themselves and the world around them, while promoting tolerance and mutual respect.

Moral Development, Resilience and Citizenship

Teaching at Market Field actively promotes resilience, confidence, tolerance and independence, enabling pupils to begin to understand and manage morally challenging situations at a level appropriate to their needs.

Pupils are supported to:

  • recognise right and wrong
  • understand the impact of their actions on others
  • develop empathy and fairness
  • manage disagreements and make positive choices

Strong community links, including work with local services such as the community police and Essex Fire Service, help pupils understand co-operation, safety and their role within society. These experiences reinforce expectations and support pupils to grow into responsible citizens, prepared to participate positively in modern Britain.

Learning About Society and Identity

Across the curriculum, pupils are supported to learn about:

  • Identity and diversity
Pupils develop an awareness of themselves and others, learning that everyone is unique and deserving of respect. At an appropriate level, they are supported to recognise unkind behaviour, discrimination and bullying.

  • Rights and responsibilities
Through routines, rules and supported discussion, pupils learn that rights come with responsibilities and that rules help keep everyone safe and included.

  • Democracy and pupil voice
Pupils are encouraged to make choices, express preferences and have their views heard. This may include supported decision-making, class votes or contributing ideas about their school environment.

  • Current events and communication
Where appropriate, pupils explore simplified, accessible versions of current events. They are supported to develop communication skills by expressing opinions, listening to others and understanding different viewpoints.

  • Media and influence
Pupils are helped to understand how messages, images and information can influence beliefs and behaviour in age and developmentally appropriate ways.

Preparing Pupils for Life in the Community

Through consistent reinforcement of our values and carefully planned learning experiences, pupils at Market Field develop:

  • confidence to make choices
  • understanding of expectations in different settings
  • communication and self‑advocacy skills
  • respect for others and their differences

This ensures pupils are as well prepared as possible for life beyond school, in line with their individual needs and next steps.
