Wheels for All

Inclusive Cycling at Market Field School

At Market Field School, we are proud to work in partnership with Wheels for All Colchester, part of a national inclusive cycling programme designed to ensure that every child, regardless of disability or complexity of need, can experience the joy and benefits of cycling.

Wheels for All is an inclusive cycling programme that supports children and adults with disabilities and differing needs to engage in high-quality cycling opportunities using a wide range of adapted bicycles, including trikes, handcycles, tandems and wheelchair‑accessible cycles. Sessions are delivered in a safe, supportive and structured environment by trained staff and volunteers, with a strong emphasis on confidence‑building, enjoyment and individual success.

At Market Field School, participation in Wheels for All is a valued part of our inclusive curriculum offer for pupils on the Firm Foundations pathway. The programme enables our pupils to access purposeful physical activity in a way that is fully adapted to their sensory, communication and physical needs.

Cycling sessions take place at Colchester Sports Park, using a purpose-built cycle track that offers a calm, spacious and accessible environment ideally suited to children who benefit from routine, structure and reduced sensory overload.

How Wheels for All supports our curriculum

Through Wheels for All, pupils on the Firm Foundations pathway are supported to:

  • Engage in regular physical activity in a meaningful and accessible way, promoting health, wellbeing and enjoyment of movement
  • Develop confidence and independence, building trust in new experiences at their own pace using appropriately adapted equipment
  • Experience success through personalised support, with adults carefully matching cycles, pace and expectations to each child’s needs
  • Participate in inclusive community‑based learning, helping pupils feel valued, included and part of a wider local provision.

The programme strongly reflects our school values of Respect, Excellence and Friendship, offering opportunities for shared experiences, turn‑taking, communication and positive interaction with trusted adults in a real‑world context.

What this means for your child

For our students on the Firm Foundations pathway, Wheels for All provides:

  • A low‑pressure, highly structured physical activity that supports regulation and emotional wellbeing
  • Opportunities to develop gross motor skills, balance and spatial awareness through purposeful movement
  • Carefully supported exposure to new environments, helping pupils generalise skills beyond the classroom.
  • A sense of achievement and independence, whether riding independently, with physical support, or alongside a trusted adult

Most importantly, children are supported to experience cycling in a way that is positive, safe and enjoyable, building confidence in their own abilities and fostering a lifelong relationship with physical activity.

Ofsted alignment

Wheels for All supports the Quality of Education by enabling pupils to access a broad, ambitious and inclusive curriculum that is carefully adapted to their individual needs. It also contributes strongly to Personal Development, promoting physical health, confidence, resilience and participation in community activities that prepare pupils for life beyond school.
