Mathematics
Mathematics at Market Field School
At Market Field School, all children engage in mathematics on a daily basis. Our mathematics curriculum is carefully designed to meet the needs of our diverse cohorts and pathways, ensuring that every child can access meaningful, relevant and ambitious mathematical learning.
At the heart of our mathematics provision is the aim to equip children with the essential mathematical skills they need for everyday life. We want our children to develop confidence and enjoyment in mathematics, enabling them to apply their skills in real-life contexts, such as managing money, understanding time, problem-solving and making informed choices.
Through carefully planned teaching and supportive pedagogy, children are encouraged to develop resilience and independence in their learning. Lessons often include practical, interactive and collaborative approaches before progressing to more independent and written work as appropriate.
Our mathematics curriculum is delivered through our differentiated pathways to ensure that learning is purposeful, accessible and matched to each child’s needs.
Pathway 3 – Developing Skills for the Future
Children on Pathway 3 follow the Early Learning Goals during the EYFS phase before progressing to the National Curriculum for Mathematics up to Year 9. At Key Stage 4, learners work towards Entry Level and Functional Skills qualifications.
The White Rose Maths scheme of work is used at an appropriate level for each child, ensuring structured progression and consistency. Areas of study include:
- Place value
- Addition and subtraction
- Multiplication and division
- Fractions, decimals and percentages
- Measurement
- Geometry
- Statistics
There is a strong emphasis on applying mathematical knowledge to real-life problem-solving. Children are supported through the use of practical resources and concrete experiences, including counters, number lines, Numicon, hundred squares, scales, money and clocks.
As children develop confidence and understanding, reliance on concrete resources is gradually reduced, allowing learners to move towards mental strategies and more abstract thinking.
Pathway 2 - Skills Development
Children who are learning on Pathway 2 also access the National Curriculum for Mathematics using the White Rose Maths scheme of work, with learning adapted to meet individual needs.
The focus is on developing confidence, core mathematical understanding and functional skills. At Key Stage 4, children work towards Entry Level and Functional Skills qualifications, supporting them to apply mathematics in practical and everyday contexts.
Pathway 1 – Preparing for Life
Children on Pathway 1 typically work towards individual maths targets identified in their Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
Mathematical learning is highly personalised and focusses on practical, real-life skills, particularly:
- Number
- Time
- Money
Children continue to access relevant elements of the National Curriculum, with an increasing emphasis on functional and life‑skills learning. In Key Stages 3 and 4, pupils follow ASDAN qualifications, which support the development of mathematical understanding through topic-based and real-life learning opportunities.
Firm Foundations – the Autism Base Pathway
Children within our Firm Foundations Pathway work on individualised targets linked closely to their EHCP outcomes.
Mathematics learning is delivered through the AFLLS and ABLLS frameworks, ensuring a highly personalised and developmentally appropriate approach. Learning focusses on functional understanding, communication, and real-life application, with a strong emphasis on consistency, structure and meaningful engagement.
