English overview:

  • Our KS3 English curriculum covers the topics outlined in the National Curriculum but also links in to the Primary National Curriculum to allow for fully differentiated lessons through quality first teaching, targeting the specific skills each individual student is working towards.
  • EHCP targets link into the English curriculum to ensure a personalised approach.


Curriculum Map:


Autumn Term 1 - Myths and Legends (eg. Thesus and the Minotaur, Narcissus, Androcles and the Lion, The cave of the One Eyed Giant, Beowolf)

Autumn Term 2 - Christmas Topics and Stories (on teacher's discretion this topic may not be introduced until late November/early December)

Skills covered in the Autumn Term: Poetry, Story Writing, Short Stories, Writing from a descriptive viewpoint, recounts, opinions and points of view

Spring Term 1 and 2 - Popular Authors (i.e. Jacqueline Wilson, Anne Fine, Michael Morpurgo, Dick King Smith, Roald Dahl, David Walliams, JK Rowling)

Skills covered in the Spring Term: Descriptive Writing, Analysis, Letters, Diary Writing, Points of View, Opinions

Summer Term 1 and 2 - Media, Analyse, Review and Comment (non fiction including newspapers, magazines and notices. May link to plays, films and events)

Skills covered in the Summer Term: Labels and Captioning, Writing to: Inform, Persuade, Argue and Advise
