Learning For Life
Our school views the role of sport as being of fundamental importance. Many major team games (football, basketball, handball, rugby, hockey, rounders and cricket) are played and the school endeavours to play competitive fixtures on a regular basis. We compete in inter-school events with other special schools (MESSA competitions) and our pupils gain much from this experience.
Both individual and team sports are covered in P.E curriculum time. In KS1 students have 1 PE session per week and have blocks of swimming lessons at Leisure World, Colchester. Throughout KS2, our students access horse-riding (certificated) and swimming rotationally. They also have 1 lesson of PE per week. In KS3 pupils access a double session which includes all of the MESSA competition sports as well as agility, balance, co-ordination and speed skills. KS4 pupils also access swimming on a rotational basis. We also run lunchtime clubs and ‘Sky Sports’ to extend and involve students further. We are fortunate to have a full size playing field adjacent to the school and to have use of the local leisure complex for swimming – further contacts exist locally.
The school is also fortunate to boast coaching experience and qualifications in football, rugby, basketball, tennis, cricket and volleyball. Some of our staff have coached at a high level. We also have qualified swimming coaches who help to deliver swimming lessons at KS4 and within the Autism bases.
